Kathmandu: The second special general convention of the Nepali Congress is beginning today, with supporters and general convention delegates from most districts already present in Kathmandu.

According to Manoj Mani Acharya, coordinator of the second special general convention management secretariat, registration of general convention delegates will start at 8 am today. Registration will be carried out from stalls set up near the main gate of the convention venue, Bhrikutimandap.

Delegates have been requested to bring a valid identification document, one passport-sized photograph and a registration fee of Rs 1,000 at the time of registration.

Inauguration at 1 pm
The special general convention will be formally inaugurated at 1 pm today. Organizers have stated that all preparations for the convention have been completed. They have claimed that around 60 percent of the total general convention delegates will participate in the event.

Statutory Basis for Special Convention
On Asoj 29, a total of 54.58 percent of the party’s general convention delegates formally demanded the holding of a special general convention. As per Article 17 (2) of the Nepali Congress statute, a special general convention must be convened within three months if at least 40 percent of the delegates make such a demand.

Two-Day Convention Under General Secretaries’ Leadership
The two-day special general convention, beginning today, is being held under the leadership of General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma. The organizers say the convention aims to revive and reform the party by invoking statutory provisions, amid criticism that the establishment faction has neglected internal party reform.
